Ted Lasso

I’m not a TV addict that needs to watch every popular show so I can say “I’ve seen it” around the coffee table. My time is too precious to waste value couch moments with TV streaming any content because it’s “just released”.

Ted Lasso is a show that has intrigued me and my interest with the positive reviews, awards and Jason Sudeikis starring role yet the idea of a comedy around soccer (that I will only watch the world cup) has no incentive for me. I stayed undecided for years about this show and used a few days over the Xmas Break to binge a few shows. Three days later and 22 episodes downloaded, I’m hooked!

Now, I can’t believe I waited for so long and I’m bursting for the 3rd series to be released this year.

This show has the feel of After Life (Ricky Gervais). A comedy that is pure in natural scenarios with an element of drama that is connected in life of any show you will see. My naiveness prepared myself for a sport focused storyline of a ‘back against the wall’, ‘come from behind’, feel good win that the show puts any element of these typical themes in the background.

Jason Sudeikis plays a character that almost reminds you of a Simpsons cartoon character yet you learn with every episode he is very relatable to most of us. He definitely has the “glass half full” approach to life yet we learn he deals with private battles which he struggles to speak about. The alignment to Mental Health has lessons for everyone and makes this show so powerful in its messaging.

The cast is relatively unknown to me yet you want to learn more about each of the actors with every show you digest. If Sudeikis had anything to do with casting as much as he has in terms of developing and producing the show, this man is a genius. Each of the characters are diverse, unique, comedic in their own skins and have issues in life that many people will understand.

I compared this to After Life that I thought was simply brilliant. That a series that can make you laugh, cry, be angry and you can relate to the characters. These shows don’t come around everyday and Ted Lasso is in this league. Ignore the preparation storyline, drop the emotional guard and learn from a show that will not disappoint. We all need Ted Lassos in our lives.

Series 3 is being released 15th March on Apple TV+
